Alfas del Pi / Costa Blanca Nord
Alfas del Pi
L'Alfàs del Pi is a lovely Valencian town and municipality located in the comarca of Marina Baixa, in the province of Alicante, Spain; lying at the foot of Serra Gelada, with a total population of 22,000 inhabitants.
Alfas del Pi is famous on the Costa Blanca for having more full-time foreign residents than Spanish residents. This town has the second largest concentration of Norwegian residents abroad.
The name of Alfas derives from the Arab word meaning “sown field”. The Pi part comes from the Valencian word meaning “pine tree”.
Of course the weather in Alfas del Pi like the rest of the Costa Blanca is wonderful with hot summers attracting the tourists but also the winters are mild making it an ideal location to retire.
Beaches
The center of Alfas del Pi is located about 2 kilometers inland but on the coast you will find Albir, which is also part of Alfas del Pi and sever other amazing beaches.
Playa de Albir. This extremely beautiful beach lies at the foot of Sierra Gelada, and begins when Cap Blanc Beach ends, although the boundaries are not very clear. Albir Beach lies further away from the main road, which is why it is more peaceful. It has a pleasant promenade lined with a few palm trees and a golf course very near to the beach. You can visit the Sirenas viewpoint, where there are some great views.
Playa de Levante. This is perhaps one of the best known beaches in Europe. This urban beach over 2 km long is a stretch of fine golden sand bathed by the calm waters of the Mediterranean and sun all day thanks to its south facing orientation.
Poniente Beach. This is the longest beach in the resort, more than 3 km long, making it an ideal place to stroll along the shore. Is characteristically quieter than Levante beach. It is an urban beach with a new modern promenade designed by the architect Carlos Ferrater and with a large number of restaurants and bars and clubs to enjoy.
Playa Mal Paz is a small cove separating the two main beaches of Levante and Poniente. With a length of about 120 meters, fine golden sand and offers a quieter more relaxed atmosphere.
Cala Finestrat. This beach is a cove, to the south of Benidorm. It is a clean, scenic beach with cafes and bars on the sea front.
Sports
For those who prefer adventure, the bay of Alfas del Pi offers the opportunity for water sports like diving, windsurfing and waterskiing.
Scorpora Diving is one of the best dive centers in the area and with over 17 years of experience, Scorpora is also one of the oldest. Its magnificent vessel is 12 meters long and allows you to enjoy your snorkeling trip. The center has everything you need to facilitate a great day of diving at one of the many local dive sites. Don't miss Mediana island or elephant caves.
The mountains and cliffs, the highest in the Mediterranean, invite you to organize excursions and sports activities and enjoy a privileged landscape.
Teams of cyclists enjoy here the challenge of cycling through the mountains. Top professional teams are among the cyclists enjoying the winter and spring sun to practise their sport. They can enjoy fast routes along the flat coastal routes or head into the mountains for a really tough ride. At times, it seems as though there are more cyclists than motorists on the roads.
There are also several golf courses nearby.
Melia Villaitana Golf Club is in a privileged location in the tourist coast of Levante. Has two courses designed by Jack Nicklaus.
All the land around has been endowed with a special microclimate, with soft and temperate winters and summers tempered by sea breezes, allowing the enjoyment of a nature that has combined cleverly with golf sport
The Altea Club De Golf was founded in 1974 by Don Luis Campomanes Asumendi. It is located in the municipal limits of Altea, a Mediterranean village famous for the beauty of its historic quarter and the distinctive natural light.
La Sella Golf is known internationally for its excellent conditions for playing golf throughout the year. It lies next to Montgó natural park, and is surrounded by Mediterranean woodland and hills. Pine trees, orange trees, olives and almonds add colour to the course.
To visit
Park natural de Sierra Gelada and the Lighthouse of Alfas del Pi. The route is quite easy as it’s well-maintained. It offers spectacular views of Altea. The trip there and back takes about two hours or a bit longer depending on how long you stop to take photos and admire the scenery, something which I’d also recommend.
It’s especially interesting to do the path right around sunset, when the special light in Altea creates a true spectacle in the sky.
The most important monument in the city is the Catholic church of Crist del Bon Encert, built in 1784.
The Film Festival of Alfas del Pi is held every year in mid-July and the city is dressed at its best for a not to miss event in the Spanish film scene. This festival is on the promenade of Albir (about 3 km from the town center) called the Paseo de la Fama, which is (as in Hollywood) where the most recognized actors at the festival have stamped their stars on the walk.
Bodegas Enrique Mendoza, surrounded by breathtakingly landscaped gardens offer you a fantastic informative trip around with a very professional guide. And to finish a tasting of 6 or 7 wines interspersed with bread, biscuits, cheese, meat and chocolate.
Terra Natura is a paradise for animal lovers. The park is divided into four sections: Pangaea, Europe, Asia and America. It’s an interesting park because you hardly feel like there are barriers between you and the animals.
Aqualandia is a water park with a good selection of rides and activities ranging from fun things for little children to adrenaline-pumping rides for older, more daring visitors.
Dining out
Alfas del Pi offers rich Mediterranean cuisine with rice, sweet desserts and tasty.
Le Boulevard (Calle Ruperto Chapi, 12) has always been and still is one of the best restaurants in Albir. The chef is extremely passionate about his work and creative with combinations of flavours. He always serves delicious and exciting food. Service is also outstanding, very friendly staff with lots of knowledge.
For the best coffee with cake choose D Origin Coffee Roasters ( Calle Bulevard dels musics, 21). It’s a classy place with a great location by the sea and friendly service to your table.
Enjoy the best tapas and fantastic mango daiquiri in Noah Lounge and Gourmet (Juan Sabastian Bach, 5). The food here is consistently fantastic and the drinks always served to perfection.
To get there
Albir is situated midway between two international airports, to the South there is Alicante International airport and to the north there is Valencia international airport.
Once at the airport you have a range of different airport transfer options to Alfas del Pi including private shuttle buses, taxis or Alfas del Pi car hire.
