Orihuela is the historical capital of the Vega Baja area with just over 50,000 inhabitants.
This a beautifully rich, green valley covered with the orange and lemon trees.
The region can be split into three distinct zones; the surrounding countryside, the coastal area known as the Orihuela Costa and the city itself. This area is ideal if you want to experience the typical Spanish lifestyle.

Orihuela Costa has 16 km of coastline with crystal-clear water to fine white sandy beaches. In other words, this label stands for the clearest water and properly maintained beaches.
Nature
Orihuela lies in a fertile plain of Segura river, backed by mountain ranges. This area owes an important ecological heritage, which is reflected in the wide variety of landscapes that contrast each other, such as the River Segura which winds its way through two different types of landscapes: dry lands and irrigated lands. All these mountains have great ecological value and landscape that is representative of the native flora and fauna.
Beaches
The beaches of Orihuela are highlighted for its crystal clear waters, which have won numerous certificates.
- La Zenia Beach also known as Cala Bosque. The beach with a cozy feeling.
It’s the most famous beach of Orihuela Costa. Important, it is accessible for the disabled people with reserved parking spots. - La Glea Beach. Also known as “Dehesa de campoamor”. Half a kilometre of fine white sand, it feels not so crowded due to its size. Sometimes there is a lot of seaweed that washes on the shore. Naturally ,seaweed means that the sea is very healthy.
- Aguamarina. A relatively quiet beach next to a protected cliff-side nature reserve.This natural beach is bordering on the south with la Glea and has got a special access for handicapped people.
- Punta Prima is about 234 meters of beach and has elevator access which ensures good access for the disabled.
- Cala Capitan. On the Cala Capitán beach stands out a small islet called Isla del Carmen, accessible from the seashore of the beach and located a short distance. Here you can sunbathe and practice diving, snorkelling, watching the thousands of little fish, swimming in the clear blue water.
- Playa Flamenca is popular due to its bars and shops, restaurants nearby. Here you can find a Saturday market. If you are after fresh fruit and veg all locally grown then this is the place for you! Stalls full of fresh baked bread and pastries. Plenty of coffee and hot food vans too.
- Cabo Roig. On the edge of the beach, “Cabo Roig” has a Marina and located in a bay.
At the end of the horizon you can see the “Mar Menor” and the sierras. If you want a quite beach, away from the hordes of people, this is the place to go.

Orihuela is well-known for its quality golf Courses that have been renowned around the world.
- Villamartin Golf club designed by Puttman and indeed, it’s one of the most established in the region of the Costa Blanca.Experts say that the design of this Orihuela Costa Golf Courses is extraordinary.And the natural surrounding is superb. The golf provide possibilities for players for all levels.
- Real Club de Golf Campoamor. It is 6203 meters long.
Besides, the golf club is surrounded by orange trees and beautiful Mediterranean pine trees . The Real Club de Golf Campoamor courses are beautiful because you can see the coast from Torrevieja to the Mar Menor. - Las Ramblas. The designer is Pepe Gancedo - a famous golf course designer in Spain. But is also well known in this circuit on international level. The Golf club is 5914 meters long, and is surrounded by water and pine trees, which gives you a splendid view from many part of the course of the nearby beautiful blue sea.
- Las Colinas. It is in the middle of nature. The greens are across a valley and between hills. It is great for amateurs and professionals.
Orihuela Costa can offer huge range of activities: all types of sailing, windsurfing, rowing, canoeing, snorkelling, scuba diving and fishing. On the other hand for those who prefer land to sea, there is also an extensive range of activities to choose from: mountain climbing (Barranco de la Higuera), biking (Sierra de Escalona) and hiking (Sierra de Orihuela and La Pedrera reservoir)

- Majestic Catedral del Salvador y Santa Maria (Calle Ramon).It is a gothic style church with a beautiful cathedral. The main attraction is the cathedral along with its history. The church has an organ in the middle with many alters. And the artwork is beautiful too. It is a small but very pleasant place with good gothic architecture that you will enjoy.
- Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro de Orihuela is one of the best art museums in the Orihuela that you must see. The building itself is a piece of the Spanish art.
- Iglesia Santa Justa (Plaza de Anunciacion) is another church with a fantastic architecture. It was built by the involvement of the medieval masons who were great in their jobs. The tower and the doors are quite impressive but the interior is really simple. Beautiful in its simplicity has an effect in its surrounding and is definitely worth a visit.
- Iglesia de Santiago Apostol (Plaza Santiago,2) Built in the 15th century. The style of the main doorway is Isabelline Gothic, whilst the side doorway is Baroque, which gives access to the chapel and the tower, where the belfry is located.
- Castillo de Orihuela / Ruinas Gloriosa, also known as the Castle of Glorious Ruins, is situated on the hill of San Miguel, at an altitude of over 200 metres. During the Spanish War of Succession, a huge explosion, caused by a lightning strike, destroyed the castle and, finally, after various storms throughout the 17th century, the earthquake of 1829 caused the collapse of the building, making restoration impossible.
- Casa Museo Miguel Hernandez (Calle Miguel Hernandez) is one of the important Spanish history museums related to the poet Miguel Hernández who was born in Orihuela. Here you can see the lifestyle and the inspiration for his poetry. The great yet sad history of the poet will surely have an emotional effect on you.
- Cabo Roig tower is the most prominent monument of Orihuela Costa. It is located near the beach of the same name, and consists of a military tower built in the 16th century to prevent attacks from pirate ships. Its structure allowed a broad view of the coast and it is a point of great cultural interest in the city.
- Palacio del Conde de la Granja. This palace is a monument of Baroque art, which is open to the public and contains furniture from the period. You can see paintings by important artists of the time, such as Federico Madrazo and Francisco Bayeu.

- La Zenia Boulevard is the biggest shopping center of the province of Valencia -Alicante. La Zenia Boulevard has 150 stores.
- Dos Mares Centro Commercial is a shopping mall on a 15 min drive from Orihuela Costa.It has most of the common Spanish stores
To eat
The local cuisine in Orihuela is a healthy Mediterranean one; the Costa Blanca is rich in fish, vegetables, olive-oil, rice and fruit and the ingredients which are all used to prepare delicious, healthy dishes, such as Paella Valenciana, Arroz Negra, Arroz al horno (Oven baked rice), Arroz a banda (fish and rice stew), Arroz del Señoret (Princes rice).
Aside from seafood, typical dishes include succulent lamb chops, rabbit in garlic, roast leg of lamb with garlic and fresh rosemary.

To get there
Orihuela can best be reached on the N340 if travelling from Alicante.
Orihuela is also close to the large town of Torrevieja.
