Valverde / Costa Blanca Sur
Valverde
Valverde is a little village in the municipality of Elche, in the province of Alicante. It is divided into Valverde Alto and Valverde Bajo. And has about 2000 inhabitants.
Valverde is notable for its rural character and its Mediterranean-type agriculture, especially for the cultivation of almond trees and pomegranates.
There is a small supermarket in the village, that sells fresh bread and croissant, fresh vegetables and fruits, and it has a small butcher and fish counter.
Valverde is situated only in 6 km from Santa Pola beaches and 15 km from the centre of Elche city.
Beaches
The beach at Playa Lissa in Santa Pola has some great bars and restaurants. It’s a lovely sweeping beach, exceptionally clean. At the far end of Playa Lissa (to the right as you look at the sea) is a place to hire and learn windsurfing and kite surfing. Playa Tamarit in Santa Pola is one of the most quiet beaches and has an area reserved for sporting activities like kite surfing. The esplanade is clean and well maintained and the sunsets are spectacular from here.
Perhaps the finest beach is the Carrabassi at Gran Alacant - gorgeous sand and warm sea to swim in.
There are also really lovely beaches set in pine forests if you go south to La Marina and Guardamar and beyond. Here are the beaches of El Pinet, Les Pesqueres, La Marina and El Rebollo, where clear waters and fine sand provide excellent swimming, which can be combined with pleasant strolls among the pine groves flanking the beach. (As you make your way across the salt water lakes, notice the beautiful pink flamingos to the right.)
Things to do
Go to explore Elche - a city ready for you to discover its best secrets. Have a tour of the old town where important samples of the Muslim past are preserved, such as the Arab baths and the Calahorra tower. You will also see Gothic-Renaissance buildings, such as the town hall and baroques such as the Basilica of Santa Maria.
Also visit Palmeral, the Palm Garden right in the centre of Elche city. It has made the UNESCO World Heritage list. It’s also known as El Huerto Del Cura, this small garden exhibits a large variety of palm trees and cacti. The jewel of this well-maintained garden is the Imperial Palm Tree, which has a shaped of candelabra.
Stroll through the old town of Santa Pola, a typical Mediterranean fishermen's village. Visit the fishing port, the municipal aquarium or simply enjoy the sun and its beautiful golden beaches. From the 6 pm in the evening go to the fresh fish market in Santa Pola - you can watch the fish being taken off of the fishing boats and brought directly to the market.
A great trip out can be to the island of Tabarca - you can buy tickets at the Santa Pola harbour and take the boat across to the island where there is amazingly clear water and loads of restaurants.
Only in 2 kms from the village you can find The Rio Safari park. This zoo is an amazing day out. Entry is well priced but can be cheaper if you can pick up one of the discount leaflets in town or on the nearest petrol station. You will find it very educational for your kids.
Dining out
In Valverde there is a lovely little square where locals come to drink coffee or eat great tapas in the mid morning break at Valverde Bar (Calle Guillermo Santacilla, 13). Here you will enjoy authentic homemade and traditional food.
For a fine dining book La Finca (Partida Perleta, poligono 1n7, Elche). A Michelin Must! Very high quality cuisine : an exquisite and vast succession of small dishes, 20 different ones with the Elementos menu. Excellent Spanish wines, generously served.
La Masia de Chencho (Lugar Jubalcoi, polígono 1 n9, Elche). This is a quality restaurant with high class of food and wine. Extremely nice food, presented in a fabulous way with service minded staff.
Pilsen Restauracion (Calle Benito Perez Galdos, 74, Elche). Fantastic dining experience feeling at home .Very good in broth rice with fish base and lobster.
To get there
Valverde is situated only 10 minutes by car from Alicante-Elche Airport and 15 minutes from the A7 exit to the airport.
