Villamartin
Villamartín is an authentic Mediterranean town in the Costa Blanca with a wide range of leisure services and facilities. The area is very popular with tourists and most of the population consists of Western European expatriate communities who have settled there in the last 10 years, virtually transforming the village into a modern-looking town. The major attraction for both domestic and non-domestic tourism is the climate, as Villamartin has some 300 days of sunshine and a 20 degree average annual temperature, as well as the number of large beaches located in the area which were awarded the European Blue Flag for cleanliness, safety and the provision of facilities for the whole family.
Beaches Playa Flamenca is good beach for a night out. It has got actually 2 main beaches either side of the promenade (Paseo) plus a few little hidden coves to discover for those of you wishing to lose the tourists and children for a peaceful day of sun worshipping.
La Zenia has probably the best known beaches the Orihuela Costa. There are 3 in total, 1 either side of the Hotel La Zenia (Cala Bosque & Cala Cerrada), and a short stroll around the coastal path is Cala Capitan. Perfect for families. Always lovely and clean with a snack bar and life guard on site. There is a shallow cove on one side.
Mil Palmeras – (a thousand palms) is the southernmost tip of the Orihuela Costa beaches, a beautiful and interrupted stretch of coastline. In spring and summer its great as you get a warm breeze and you can walk for miles in either direction upon the sand or on the promenade.
Cabo Roig offers 2 beaches, Cala Caleta and Playa de la Regia. The old Water Tower on the cliff top overlooks the beaches and Marina.
Campoamor has 2 beaches, one on either side of the Marina; Playa de la Glea and Playa Barranco Rubio. Both have excellent facilities and traditional Spanish restaurants.
La Mata – also called Torrelamata and situated just north of Torrevieja, this excellent beach is the longest in Torrevieja reaching from Cabo Cervera to the far end of La Mata.
Playa de los Náufragos – protected by the southern dock of the port this is one of Torrevieja’s most animated and lively beaches with a number of sporting activities.
Sports Many tourists come to Villamartin because it is close to three championship golf courses – Campoamor, Las Ramblas and Villamartin, which was home to the 1994 Mediterranean Open.
Villamartin Campo de Golf. This absolutely Mature Golf Course with stunning greens was designed by Mr. Puttman and opened in 1972. The course is not too long, and is well adapted to the natural surroundings and terrain. Its extraordinary design and unmatched setting undoubtedly make this course one of the best golf courses in Spain
Las Ramblas golf course was created by the famous designer Pepe Gancedo, always providing his designs with creative and innovative characteristics with quality that has earned his national and international reputation.
Las Ramblas golf course has incomparable beauty and has been developed on a steep terrain surrounded by water. The vegetation surrounding the course is formed primarily of leafy pines that create an unforgettable backdrop for the course. Furthermore, Las Ramblas offers Magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Real Club de Golf Campoamor built on a former country estate and surrounded by beautiful unspoilt countryside, was designed to take advantage of the unusual terrain of the area.
The course is situated about 100 metres above sea level. In addition to this attractive and original layout, with marvellous views over the intense blue of the Mediterranean, the special features of the course create difficult rounds for experienced players and simpler ones for those new to the sport.
What to see
Dolmen de Alberite. Magnificent megalithic group of the oldest in Europe: 6,500 years old.
Aquapolis water park in Torrevieja is also a good day out. Better to get a weekly pass, because there are plenty of things to do: slides, pools, jacuzzis, coffee places and restaurants.
Step back in time with a stroll around the heart of Orihuela’s historic town centre. You may want to leave time to visit some of the museums and churches you will encounter along the way. Head to the imposing Gothic cathedral, which houses works of art by Velazquez and Francisco Salzillo. Walk along the riverbed to the town hall and the beautiful Plaza del Carmen, a picturesque square where you can enjoy a coffee. Heading back towards town you will pass the Moors and Christians museum, where you can learn about the history of this annual fiesta.
Make a picnic around solt lakes of Torrevieja - home to a rare pink lake, which is opposite another green salt lake. These offer fabulous natural havens for a walk. Around the salt lakes are several viewing posts, so you can get a better look at the lakes, which are used to extract 700,000 tonnes of salt every year. During your circular tour, you may spot flamingos, ducks, terns, gulls, rabbits, hares, weasels and foxes.
Dining out
The Hen’s teeth (Avenida de las Brisas, Villamartin). Excellent restaurant serving everything from basic tapas to top of the range steak which includes several vegetarian and vegan options.This restaurant is well known for the quality of the food, the interesting variety of the menu and the excellent service
To enjoy a truly professional cooking book The Square Restaurant. Their Sunday roast dinners are just amazing.
For a special and fine dining The Cellar Door is a place to be! (Lugar Playa Flamenca 97-101,Playa Flamenca, Orihuela). Your heart will be stolen with an absolutely star level discovery menu. It’s tastefull and perfect presentation makes every plate a lust for the eye. Michelin Star worthy place.
Shopping The main commercial center is “Villamartin Plaza”,a pretty, open air, two storey “square" with fountains and gardens. This is a square with a black and white chessboard pattern surrounded by shops, bars, cafes, banks and restaurants. In the heat of summer the nightlife atmosphere is buzzing with life and noise. The Plaza is built around a square that has a number of palm trees which are home to quite a few African Ring Neck Parrots. These parrots have achieved a celebrity status with the local tourists who are not used to the sight, and are seen as a pleasant addition to the area.
Whilst Villamartin offers a great selection of shops, the fantastic, new, open- air “super" shopping and leisure centre at La Zenia Bulevard is only about 20 minutes' walk away.
Getting there Villamartin is situated about 8km south of the large town of Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca and is just a short drive from the AP-7 Alicante - Cartagena motorway.
Once at the airport you have a range of different airport transfer options to Villamartin including private shuttle buses, taxis or Villa Martin car hire. It will take you 45 minutes via AP7 motorway.
