Alicante

Alicante is the capital of the province of Alicante and one of the most beautiful Spanish cities. Also a hotspot destination for city breaks in the sun. Situated on the Spanish coast, Alicante offers a rich mix of historical sites, shopping destinations, and beachfront amenities. The beautiful scenery makes this seaside city a favourite for tourists.

The land of Alicante has been inhabited for over 7000 years with the first Iberian tribes. Since then the area has been inhabited successively by Greeks, Romans, Muslims, and Christians. Nowadays, the population of Alicante city is about 350,000 inhabitants, ranking as the second-largest Valencian city.

With its golden sandy beaches, numerous parks and a very pleasant climate, the city offers a high quality of life, which is apparent also in the behaviour of its inhabitants: in Spain, the population of Alicante has the reputation to be hospitable and welcoming.

Beaches

Playa del Postiguet, Alicante's city beach. This attractively coloured sandy beach gets packed in summer. A couple of hours on the idyllic white sands and clear blue waters and you forget you’re actually in a bustling city. Once the sun starts to set, you can amble back up along the promenade to grab some delicious tapas in one of the many beachfront restaurants. Albuferetta. An intimate, residential stretch of sand in the residential development of the same name to the northwest of the city.
Northeast of the town, Playa de San Juan is larger and usually less crowded than the city beach. Almost 3 kilometres of golden sand make San Juan the most popular beach in Alicante. El Saladar-Urbanova beach is located 5 kilometres south of the city centre, in a quiet area.  Its fine, golden sands stretch for over 1.5 kilometres, making it perfect for strolling along. Its setting is semi-urban and to the north there is a line of sand dunes, which enhance the view.
Playa de Aguamarga -a unique beach in Europe that has been adapted especially for dogs. It’s the first ‘Dog Friendly’ beach in Spain, allowing dogs to go into the sea during the summer months.

El Barrio, or the old town, is the historical heart of Alicante, and one of the most beautiful spots to spend a day of wandering.

It is easily accessible as there is a lift that takes you directly to the top or, for the more adventurous among you, there is winding path that takes you to entrance. The castle stands 166 metres above sea level so you can enjoy outstanding views of almost the entire Alicante bay. The origins of the castle date back to the 9th century when the Moors controlled this area of Spain and is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe.

Basílica de Santa María (14th - 16th century) is the oldest church in the city. It was built in Gothic style above the former Moorish Mosque of Alicante.
La Explanada de Espana. It is Alicante’s main and most beautiful promenade and is constructed of 6.6 million red, cream and black tiles. Created in 1867 by architect Jose Guardiola Pico who wanted to create the perfect accompaniment to the Spanish custom of an evening stroll. The pattern mirrors the rolling Mediterranean waves and complimented by 400 palm trees lining the walkway.

You  will also enjoy a walk around the corner along Calle San Francisco, which is like walking down the yellow brick road. The street has been transformed into a children’s dream with coloured tarmac, giant mushrooms with snails and little playgrounds.
